PFLANZ NOTES
3-D TV

High Definition giant screen 3-D TV is not a passing fad, It is here to stay. Entertainment libraries are rapidly growing. The variety is becoming far more extensive, and the future is going to be most amazing.

This is one of the greatest adventures since radio. That's old fashioned AM radio where your grand parents and great grand parents listened to stations like KDKA Pittsburg, and WGN Chicago.

For many a simple crystal radio receiving set was the latest technology.

No batteries or external source of electric power was needed. The far distant radio station provided all of the power that was necessary. All that was needed was a long wire aerial or antenna, and a galena crystal in a holder touched by the Cats Whisker. This Cats Whisker was a stainless steel conical shaped spring that was fitted over the end of a tiny boom. The adjustment end of the boom had an insulated handle for the fingers and thumb. This tiny boom that facilitated the adjustment of the Cat's Whisker was approximately two inches in length. There were slight variations in length as it was not critical to the operation of the radio receiving set.

The smallest part of the cone was elongated into a short straight section that was affixed to point downward toward the surface of the galena crystal. The end of the spring wire was cut cleanly at a 45 degree angle. The point of this angular cut was then placed on the *Sweet Spot (*Maximum Volume) of the galena crystal. The crystal was acting as a rectifier or diode. Once the delicate sweet spot on the surface of the galena was attained the position was noted so that future searches could be shortened.

The crystal face was kept very clean. the use of anhydrous alcohol or deadly Carbontetlachloride was used as a cleaning agent. There was also a large coil with a slider to change the inductance of the circuit. This would directly affect the voltages at very roughly a specific frequency. This variable inductor allowed the listener to tune between stations. That was not often done because of the limited number of stations broadcasting and for the fact that the listener was captivated by the entertainment and information emanating from the ether. The need to slide to a different frequency or as we would say today, "click around", was not of paramount concern.

The detected and rectified signal information was disseminated by a pair of simple magnetic earphones or headsets that employed a simple ferrous metallic disk diaphragm that lay over a pair of magnets.

As in loud speakers today, the greater the strength of the magnet the more efficient the earphones. In short the more powerful the magnets the greater the volume and clarity for the listener.

There was not enough voltage present to have multiple headphone setups. The headphones were passed back and forth between couples or around the table if a group was listening, each would have the duty when removing the earphones to give a quick vocal synopsis of what they had heard so that the group would not miss anything. This was done as the headphones were being passed to the next person that would enjoy his captivating few moments of sharing the new technology.
